Set design – project development for L’italiana in Algeri Opera by Rossini, according to the conception of scenic director’s Livia Sabag. The director’s intention was to update Rossini’s work, with simple and functional scenarios that were transmuted into 4 different environments: Mustafa and Elvira’s terrace; the port, where they received stolen goods and human trafficking; Mustafa’s warehouse and office; and the ship, which the Italians intended to use to escape. All set changes should be made during scenes, with the stage crew mingling with the cast, characterized as harbor workers or Mustafa employees. The scenery construction should have few elements, due to the limited budget and reduced backstage area at the theatre.
Teaser L'Italiana in Algeri | Daniela Gogoni, cenógrafa
“It is impossible to ask for better scenic direction than Livia Sabag conceived, and scenarios more ingenious than Daniela Gogoni’s … The solutions came spontaneous, flowing, convincing. The metamorphoses of the scenario also happened with dexterity, what made the show even lighter.
In short, I think it is the best opera performance I’ve seen this year in Sao Paulo. ” Jorge Coli – Concerto
“It is rare to see an opera montage as successful as Rossini’s” L’Italiana in Algeri “presented at the Theatro São Pedro/SP.
Starting with the production that has simple, efficient, modern and current scenarios …
Theatro São Pedro proves once again that great opera montages do not need directors who overcomplicate or foreign soloists. Less is more, the simplicity combined with the competence of the professionals involved has won. So far this is the best opera of the year presented in Sao Paulo. ” Ali Hassan Ayache – Ópera, Musical & Ballet
“In her conception for the mounting at the Theatro São Pedro, director Livia Sabag imagines a Algiers closer to the present day and with characteristics that could be associated with many places …
Daniela Gogoni’s sceneries are one of the most rewarding points of this montage … they reveal a creative artist who can mean a fresh breath in a very concentrated market, as one can count on the fingers of one hand the number of set designers constantly working with opera in Brazil. ” Leonardo Marques – Movimento
“Observing the opera’s ability to deal with difficult issues is stimulating. But it would make little sense if, on stage, the show didn’t work. But it works, with an intelligent concept and an efficient achievement, which highlights the skilful direction of performance, which peaked in the final scene of the first act, in which the careful work of the movement achieves a simple and effective result.” João Luiz Sampaio – Scherzo
